Silk/cotton Rug from Turkey
On a brief trip to Turkey, we visited a special rug-making facility in the Selcuk region. The cooperative and UNESCO facility where this was made teaches and employs many people who want to learn this skill. It takes years for an apprentice to learn this trade. Places such as this one help to maintain the culture and craft while supporting the community. UNESCO ensures that people are properly paid and fairly treated. Being a place of learning, you are treated to a demonstration of how silk worms are used, and the silk treads are achieved. The rug we acquired measures 5 feet by 7 feet and is hand-made on a loom using 70% silk and 30% cotton threads and done in earth tones in shades including green, yellow, blue and brown. After taking months to weave, this rug will last for years and maintain its value. This work of art can be used as a floor rug because of its tensile strength, or as a wall hanging. Whichever way you choose, it will surely enhance your room.
Tabriz Wool / Silk Rug from Persia
For hundreds of years, people have been making silk rugs by hand on large looms. This craft is still being done today. It takes months to years to make the designs and weaves. The shop owner we met brought the rugs from his native country and sold them in a simple store in Dubai. We had met him on 2 separate trips, 4 years apart. He was warm and friendly, and he enjoyed spending time with us and talking to us. The back storage room, which few get to see but to which we were granted access, was filled with new and antique rugs. All the rugs are durable and usable, and the shop owner encourages buyers to use them as rugs. This rug is 6 ft x 9 ft and is made of 30% silk and 70% cotton in threads of multiple colors. The technique of making these rugs results in a very soft, plush feel. You will enjoy walking on them for sure or admiring them as wall hangings
